Collection History
How the collection took shape
The Jackson State University Art Collection reflects decades of collecting in support of teaching, cultural engagement, and public learning. Its roots extend to Lawrence Arthur Jones, the first chair of the Art Department, who assembled works to broaden students’ access to global artistic traditions and forms of expression.
Today the collection is housed in Johnson Hall, a facility that provides secure and climate-conscious care for the university’s art holdings. Physical stewardship remains essential, but so does intellectual access: the collection also serves as a teaching resource, a research asset, and a foundation for future curatorial work.
